Red Humpy is the creation of Natalie Carpenter, a designer, writer and computer technician who has lived in southern Colorado for 18 years, in a little town surrounded by endless lakes and creeks. Natalie began fly fishing when she grew tired of pulling out trout and couldn’t release them again because the bait and lures injured the fish. She would keep a few to eat, then have to stop fishing.
After being introduced to fly fishing and the method of catching and releasing a fish, she was, well, hooked! The art of fly fishing involves casting a line the correct distance over the water with the goal of getting a hand-tied fly to land where you want it, float and drift naturally, and attract a fish. There are wet flies that stay under the water and look like little swimming insects or larvae, and there are also dry flies that float like little bugs on the surface in a lake or creek. A red humpy is a dry fly.
Specifically, the red humpy is a stimulator fly, designed to attract attention, meant to be visible. When Natalie branched from the more technical side of her business as the Computer Tamer, she needed a name for her design company, one that would reflect her identity and what it is she is trying to accomplish with her designs.
According to Natalie, “The red humpy is the fly I use most often when I’m fishing the high mountain creeks that surround my home town of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and it was the first dry fly that I learned to tie. It floats extremely well, it is easy to see in low light conditions, and the wild cutthroat strike it HARD.”
